The global economy is in the midst of a massive transformation akin to the transition from the agricultural age to the industrial age. Workers are now increasingly in service professions, often with the ability (and sometimes the requirement) to work from anywhere (or everywhere). In this environment, companies also are free to locate anywhere across the globe. As a result, American companies increasingly face challenges from China and India as readily as from across the US.

While in theory entrepreneurs can start companies anywhere, in practice they do so where there are desirable places to live, where educated employees are available, and where state-of-the-art infrastructure exists, especially wired broadband and wireless connections. In fact, access to broadband connectivity is now a prerequisite to participate not only in the economic, civic, and cultural benefits arising from Internet access, but increasingly to access affordable and effective educational options and health care services, as well.

Out of 30 countries participating in the 2006 Programme for International Student Assessment, America’s 15-year-olds ranked 25th in math and 21st in science. Meanwhile, more than 1.2 million students drop out of school every year. That’s more than 6,000 students every school day and one student every 26 seconds. At the post-secondary level, more than one in three college freshmen enroll in at least one remedial course to catch up on skills they should have learned in high school. This figure rises to 42 percent in the nation’s community colleges. Clearly, American schools must make a change.

In the culmination of a national call for members of the YouTube community to lend their voices to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Rich Peters of Iowa City, Iowa was announced as the winner of the YouTube Convention video contest answering the question: Why are you a Democrat in 2008?

In his video, Peters explains why he believes Democrats are better-suited to address the issues he cares most about – the Iraq war, the environment, health care and the economy.

“This campaign is history. This is the first time that we – the people – can actually be a part of the conversation; we are not simply listening, we are being listened to,” said Peters, after learning of his selection. “The people have become a party to the conversation, and in a few days, I intend to serve as a bridge for the YouTube community in continuing that historic conversation at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.”

As the winner, Peters is invited to attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver later this month and see his winning video played before thousands of delegates, elected officials and other Convention guests. YouTube will also send Peters on the campaign trail for a day, where as a member of the traveling press pool, he will have the opportunity to record a video documenting the daily activities of the Democratic nominee, Senator Barack Obama.

“We look forward to having Rich join us in Denver for this history-making event,” said Aaron Myers, Director of Online Communications for the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC). “We were very impressed by the number of creative and thoughtful video submissions we received from all across the country. It’s indicative of the enthusiasm and energy behind Senator Barack Obama headed in to our Convention, where we will welcome the voices of Americans coming together for change.”

After receiving hundreds of video submissions, the DNCC announced five finalists last week and invited members of the YouTube community to vote for their favorite. Thousands answered the call in recent days. Each of the five finalists’ videos can be viewed at youtube.com/demconvention.

Representing varied areas of the country, the other finalists were Cathrin Winsor from Temple, Tex.; Timothy McDonald from Traverse City, Mich.; Morgan Harper from Atlanta, Ga.; and Brian Beach from Dayton, Ohio. The videos were selected based on their creativity, originality and persuasiveness. Democrats appearing in these videos include an Iraq war veteran, college students, a first-time voter, and a young boy with a teddy bear.

Denver Host Committee President Elbra Wedgeworth, along with Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper unveiled plans for a new city-wide bike-sharing program called Freewheelin, part of Denver’s ongoing efforts to support healthy living and environmental sustainability during and after the Democratic National Convention.

The Freewheelin program was developed by Humana in partnership with bike industry leaders. As part of the multi-pronged initiative, Humana and the not-for-profit Bikes Belong will bring nearly 1,000 bikes to Denver during the Democratic National Convention in August. The bikes can be used free of charge by anyone looking for an alternative to automobiles while the convention is in town.
